How To Grow Swede
Welcome to our guide on How To Grow Swede. Growing swede is relatively straight forward. Swedes are biennials that are grown as annuals, and are loosely described as large turnips that originated in Sweden as hybrids of turnips and wild cabbage. Skins may be purple, white or yellow and the flesh is either yellow or cream. Swedes are grown for their swollen roots.
Soil For Growing Swede
A well drained, light and fertile soil that is rich in organic matter and low nitrogen will be suitable. Work in manure or compost a few weeks before planting.
Sowing and Growing Swede
Sow in May – June in situ in seed drills 2.5 cm deep and rows of 40cm apart. Thin early so that the plants are 30cm spaced.
Keep watered and weed free.

Boron Deficiency
Harvesting and Storing Swede
Knowing how to grow swede and growing swede is one thing but you need to know when and how to harvest and store your swede.
Maturing can take up to 26 weeks, the roots swell and ready in the autumn. They can be left in the ground for winter use, covered in straw and soil. Alternatively, store in clamps or in boxes 3-4 months.
Suggested Swede Varieties
Try `Purple Top`, `Acme`, `Devon Champion` or `Chigneto`.

can you grow more sweds off a swede
I`ve always grown swede from seed….and as far as I know you can`t grow a more swedes from a swede. I may be wrong though:) has anyone out there tried it?
